A New Business Credit Card May Have A Lower
Spending Limit
When you get a new business credit card, don’t worry too much if
the spending limit is not that high. This can be true of a new
credit card for an existing business, but is more accurate when
referencing a new business that is applying for its first credit
card.
A credit card for a new business can be acquired through many
different lending companies and banks. One of the best ways to get
one is to go through a bank that already knows you, such as the one
that you personally bank at and/or the one where your business
account is held. This can raise your chances of getting a new
business credit card, whether you only need one for you, or whether
you need one for ten of your employees.
Either way, going where they know you is often the best option.
If you cannot do this for some reason, or if you simply don’t want
to, you can:
- Apply online through a company that advertises
business credit cards
- Talk with other lending institutions over the
phone and see what they have to offer, as well as their
requirements
When you apply online or talk with lenders, make sure you find
out about the repayment terms for the credit card. Some of these
cards sound good, but they can have very high interest rates and
they can also have short grace periods, hidden fees, annual fees,
and other problems that a new business owner certainly would like to
avoid.
Do I Really Need A New Business Credit Card?
If you have a brand new, very small business that involves just
you, or you and family members, you may not really need a credit
card. However, establishing credit in the name of your new business
is a good idea.
It’s also important not to mix your personal money and your
business money, so a new business credit card can be beneficial to
help you avoid that.
If you have to be licensed in your state, city, or county to do
what you do, you are a business, and you should consider the
benefits that a business credit card could give you. These are
important, but they often vary by card.
New Business Credit Card Benefits
There are often a lot of perks and benefits associated with
credit cards for new businesses. Some companies offer more than
others of course, but a business owner usually wants to look for at
least the following:
- No annual fee
- Good interest rate
- Discounts on things for business – travel, office
supplies, etc.
- A reasonable credit line
- Good repayment terms
- Detailed billing if you need more than one card on
the same account
Just like a personal credit card, a new business credit card has
a period of time to pay off the balance with no interest and then a
certain interest rate charged to any remaining balance. Paying off
your new card each month will help you build credit – and it will
save you a lot of money, too.
